also known as anchovies, is a small and flavorful fish commonly used in South Indian cuisine
. Here's a simple recipe to prepare Nethili fish fry:
Ingredients:
Nethili fish (Anchovies) - 250 grams
Red chili powder - 1 tablespoon
Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
Coriander powder - 1 tablespoon
Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tablespoon
Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
Salt - to taste
Rice flour - 2 tablespoons (optional, for extra crispiness)
Oil - for frying
Instructions:
Clean the fish:
Wash the Nethili fish thoroughly in cold water.
Drain the excess water and pat dry using a paper towel.
If the fish is large, you can cut it into smaller pieces.
Marinate the fish:
In a mixing bowl, combine red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, ginger-garlic paste, lemon juice, salt, and rice flour (if using).
Mix everything well to form a smooth paste.
Add the cleaned and dried Nethili fish to the marinade. Ensure that each piece is coated evenly with the marinade.
Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes. Marinating longer, even for a few hours in the refrigerator, can enhance the flavor.
Frying the fish:
Heat oil in a frying pan or skillet over medium heat.
Once the oil is hot, carefully place the marinated Nethili fish pieces into the hot oil.
Do not overcrowd the pan; fry in batches if necessary.
Fry the fish for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Adjust the frying time based on the size of the fish pieces.
Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried fish from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
Serve hot:
Once all the fish pieces are fried and drained, transfer them to a serving plate.
Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves or curry leaves for added flavor.
Serve the Nethili fish fry hot as a side dish with steamed rice, lemon wedges, and onion slices.
It also pairs well with rasam or sambar.
Enjoy your crispy and flavorful Nethili fish fry!
